Under the Microscope

Yesterday Hibiscusfire, myself, and other classmates were "standardized patients" for the second year students mock clinical skills exam. I had 24 people listen to and feel my heart in four and a half hours. All in all the students were pretty sharp, but there were a few choice moments like when one student entered the room and said "Oh good, you're wearing pants...I'm going to touch you now." Another student spent a few fruitless minutes searching for my PMI (point of maximum impulse/intensity, basically trying to feel where my heart beat was) and finally resorted to gently cupping my boob. I almost busted out laughing right then and there. Poor guy. At least I got a little action.

Stop In The Name Of The Law

Last night I dreamt that Turtleflight, my mom, my aunt, and some med school friends thought it'd be a good idea to go down to the public assistance office and sign up for welfare. When we got down there we were told we had to have or purchase a used car from the government first and I thought to myself "what a scam!" so we went home.

In reality related news I'm all done with my interviews. Woohoo! Ohio was an interesting state. There, as an Asian person, I truly felt I was a minority. I saw less than 10 Asian people the 4 days I was there. At some of the hospitals when I asked about the Asian population one interviewer was actually able to name all the Asian residents (all 4 of them) for me.

I watched Art School Confidential last night and highly recommend it to anyone.

Just Under The Wire

Phew, I almost let a month pass by before blogging again. I know I'm such a sporadic blogger that I don't anyone actually reads this blog anymore, but what the hey. Tomorrow I fly out to Ohio for my last two interviews and all I can say is thank goodness it's almost over. After this will just be the horror of making my match list. Lovely.

New Year's was fun. I went out with the boy and his friends to good ol' FACES where they had multiple balloon drops with $1s, $5s, and $10s in them. Around midnight the dance floor got insanely crowded as people jostled and pushed to snag some money. Out of the 8 of us who went we came out with $2. Sweet. There was also a buffet laid out where they had a whole roast pig! There must've been some Asian people in the planning committee because it looked yummy but I was suspect as to how long the food had been sitting out so I passed.

Christmas was nice. I went home the week before for the Step 2 CS with Hibiscusfire. That was a long and painful day. I'd cry if I had to retake that thing. I guess we'll see in a couple of weeks.

In my attempt to be healthy, yet lazy, I've found that you can do a pretty good job steaming carrots in the microwave. I put baby carrots in a microwaveable bowl, put a little water in it, and nuke the shit out of them for 5 minutes. I like mushy carrots so it comes out just right for me, throw a little honey glaze on there (or in my case just squeeze some out from the little plastic bear) and you're all set. Yay technology.

The High Life

Over the Thanksgiving weekend I got to see my dog Peanut who is now living with my parents. I think it's safe to say that she's actually my mom's dog now as evidenced by the following photographs.

Exhibit A: Peanut in her hand-knit sweater made by my 92 y/o great aunt who lives with my parents.

Exhibit B: Child's clothing that my mother bought and altered to fit the dog.

Exhibit C: Peanut's Halloween safari costume.

Not Again

Currently in Houston, Texas. Saw a sign on the way to the hotel that said "Got Syphilis?...you don't want it, but it's back." Awesome.
